Pretty in Pink – I was reminded of it yesterday when the title track by the Physcedelic Furs (play it now, I urge you, you must!) came on the radio as I was on my way to Cardiff to meet with the team who are designing my website for me. It made me feel so GOOD! Windows down; sunshine – glorious sunshine and music up loud – amazing how music does that isn’t it? Took me right back to my teenage years and now, looking back at it I always knew I was going to be a ‘little odd’, to the side of the norm, you know what I mean…, now I prefer to think I’m Strong and Independent of Mind and well, just a tad Quirky.. and I’m happy to be here!!
I thought I might share the stages of this journey with you, perhaps you are in the same place as me or just wanting to know how I got to where I am and for me, to realise just how far I have come! “I intend to go on doing just what I do! I’m figgering on biggering‘ as Dr Suess would say.
Not in a greedy sense you understand, in a ‘this is what you can do with your crafty hands and a little bit of luck and quite a lot of hard work’ kinda way. I want to show my kids that there is a path for everyone, that if you’re flexible enough and can act on opportunities you can do anything. I’m amazed at the energy an impulse has behind it – that when it’s right: the right time, the right person, the right thing it carries you along, things click into place and many happy events bounce along to greet each other. My little humble Pothy business is gratefully receiving the energy it deserves and it lapping it up.
Pothies have danced their way from my hands to your feet for the last 6 years. Autumn, Christmas and the early Spring, you can find me sat by the fire (usually with a glass of something yummy) indulging in the rhythm of crochet and my love affair with colour for an hour or two. It’s a pleasure to be able to make something that gives me so much back, it’s really my bliss and I’m delighted that so many of you create this opportunity for me!
My dear friend has created helped me weave together all those straggly ends of business dreams that have flitted through (and out) of my milk-filled-mummy-brain of recent years. I have a vision, a focus, a project! Now, as of last week, my project has cash- a grant application (Ceredigion is classed as an area of financial poverty) come good and a kind loan – oh my gosh, how grateful am I? See, just bouncing along and gathering momentum..
Now I’m creating a website with a team of designers in Cardiff called Burning Red, it’s the most I have ever proposed to spend on a single item (other than my home) in my life. I am a mixture of scared, thrilled and terrified all mingled together as one. I am doing it although it defies all logical sense and practical reason. It is one of the greatest creative indulgences that I have embarked upon, perhaps ever.
A fellow Quirk-arian Emma Symons of CelleyLettuce has ever so kindly joined me on this mad adventure, we met years ago and she now teaches art and pursues her amazing talents through illustration. She’s a fine and dandy, clever-chirpy companion and just the person to take into a meeting with you… (thank you Emmlington x)
Sat at a round table we brought an air of Country Bumpkin to the four walled Office of Cardiff Bay, drum kit in the corner and muffins in the middle. I have no idea what really happened but we talked of Planet Pothy where the Pothy Pirates work and play. Of Yeti’s and hugs, skipping, the quality of things that were made in the yester-year. Of scrolling experiences and shopping culture; of ‘y’ structures and other foreign speak…. It’s safe to say my head was a spin but somewhere deep down I am quietly confident that this is going to be magic!
On the drive home I pictured Planet Pothy: maybe it looks a little like this? (although I’m sure the Pothy Pirates would be a smidge happier – a ball of wool, 2 needles and NO KIDS are you kidding me?!)…. see you soon for the next instalment!
